How to Potty Train a Puppy

Getting a new puppy is one of the most exciting experiences, but the burden of learning how to potty train a puppy, not so much. Now I know puppy potty training is not a typical topic on my site, but I have had great success potty training puppies, so I just had to share my experience. Besides, puppy training, toddler potty training, pretty much the same thing. You show them the potty, they do their thing, get a reward, and this continues until they get the hang of it, right? Ohhh if it were only that easy. I will go over some of my best puppy potty training tips, and tell you how I successfully potty trained all 5 of my dogs in under a week.

Pick a spot
The first step to potty training a puppy is picking the designated spot where he/she will be going potty. This is where you will direct your dog every time it is time to go potty. If you want to learn how to potty train a puppy fast, there's no better first step than picking a spot and just getting started.


Take your dog out frequently
In the beginning your dog will not be able to tell you he has to go potty. So take him out frequently. This will prevent accidents, and give your dog more practice with potty training. Eventually your dog will get so good at this, that he will point at the door or towards the potty area when he needs to go. This is a pretty awesome accomplishment.

Reward your puppy
Pick a really awesome reward for going potty. This should be something amazing that your dog really looks forward to. Everytime your dog goes potty, make a huge deal about it and reward him. You can give one reward/treat for pee and 2 for poop.

Don't leave your dog alone for a long time
When you start potty training your puppy, especially a young one, he will not be able to hold in his pee for long. So don't leave him alone for extended periods of time. Make sure you are home and able to take him out. It can be frustrating for both you and your puppy when an accident happens that he could not control.

Commit to a potty training weekend
Trying to potty train a puppy in between a busy work schedule can be frustrating and disappointing. Get a good start over the weekend. Stay home and commit to potty training that entire weekend. There's alot you can do in just a few days. I have potty trained my chihuahua in only 3 days. She was completely potty trained. She's my last dog, so I kind of new what I was doing by then ;)

Get a guide or program
There's nothing wrong with getting a step by step puppy potty training guide. That is exactly what I did and is how I successfully potty trained all 5 of my dogs. I looked up different methods, did some research and when what I was doing was not working, I got a guide. Since then, that step by step guide has changed tremendously. How to Potty Train a Puppy In an Apartment

If you are wondering how to potty train a puppy in an apartment, it can be tricky. You have to choose a spot for your puppy to go, and help him with some training to get the job done. Step 2
Get good doggy treats. Dog love to be rewarded, it's part of what they thrive for. Get some yummy treats. Not only will your dog really look forward to getting a treat, but he can be rewarded for a job well done.


Step 3
Get a puppy potty training program. If you want to potty train your dog, and fast, the best thing you can do is to get a program that will help you and guide you. I used this puppy training program and it was the best decision ever! It will help you through the process and help you potty train your dog in an apartment fast! Crate Training a Puppy

Crate training is the 2nd most common form of potty training a puppy. Crate training encourages a puppy to control his bowel and bladder. The theory is that a puppy does not like to pee and poop where he eats and sleeps, so this forces a puppy to hold it in. Crate training a puppy is a great alternative to potty training if you are not fond of the idea of your doing soiling the house during the learning process. Here are some tips on how to properly crate train a puppy.

1. Buy a crate that is the right size. The crate should be just big enough to fit your dog when he lays down. If you have a small puppy that will grow into a big dog, then get a crate the has a divider that you can move as he gets bigger. Something like THIS one.

2. Don't expect a young puppy to hold in their pee or poop for a long time. A puppy under 4 months old will only be able to hold it in for about 4 hours, maybe a little longer at night. So start with a few hours at a time.

3. Crate your dog when you are home and can't keep an eye on him. The last thing you want is an unnecessary accident to happen, when it's totally your fault and not your puppy's.

4. Take him outside frequently when you start potty training. This is a great way to make good progress. Take him out whenever you have a chance. If you won't be home for a few hours, then make sure you have someone that can help you take your dog out. Crate training a puppy takes some work an effort in the beginning.

5. Get a guide or program to help you when you are struggling. There's nothing wrong with following a guide or getting some help from someone that knows what they are doing.
